<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, this is often the part of the relocation that dictates how the first weeks and months after the move go for the entire family.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s natural to want your children to feel excited. Adventurous. Positive.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But emotional preparation isn’t about building hype. It’s about building safety, realistic expectations and setting some very real boundaries.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post aims to give you a functional framework to prepare first yourself and then your child for the international move.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-1-start-with-honest-age-appropriate-conversations"><strong>1. Start With Honest, Age-Appropriate Conversations</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children don’t need every administrative detail, but they do need clarity about what to expect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tell them:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-where-you-re-going" class="">Where you’re going<br></li>

<li id="htoc-when-it-s-happening" class="">When it’s happening<br></li>

<li id="htoc-what-will-change" class="">What will change<br></li>

<li id="htoc-what-they-don-t-yet-know" class="">What they don’t yet know<br></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-683x1024.webp" alt="A Mother and daughter snuggled on the couch, talking about their planned international relocation." class="wp-image-1936" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-683x1024.webp 683w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-200x300.webp 200w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-768x1151.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations.webp 854w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Avoid overselling the move as “the best adventure ever”. When we overemphasise the positives, children can feel confused or guilty if they don’t feel excited.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also need to be honest with them about the negatives we can expect. Remember, homesickness, language barriers, cultural confusion and the adjustment to a new home are all foreseeable outcomes of an international move.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, try:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This is a big change. Some parts might feel exciting. Some parts might feel hard. We’ll figure it out together.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That statement recognises the good and the bad, while also building trust that you’ll be there for <em>all of it.</em></p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-2-name-what-will-stay-the-same"><strong>2. Name What Will Stay the Same</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the face of change, children look for anchors.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>What will stay the same</em>?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same-768x1024.webp" alt="A child playing with her favourite toy. Something that will stay the same after her international relocation." class="wp-image-1937" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same-768x1024.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same-225x300.webp 225w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same.webp 960w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We can help our children prepare for this massive change by giving them a strong foundation to stand on.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let them know what will be the same in their new home.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Siblings will come, their favourite toys will be with them, and they will still be able to have their favourite food or play their favourite sport.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s important to assure your child that <em>they</em> will still be them and that <em>you</em> will still be you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“You’ll still be you. You’ll still love [favourite sport]. I’ll still nag at you to brush your teeth. Our family won’t change.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The more sameness you can highlight for your child, the less scary the planned changes might sound.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think of the “sameness” as their foundation. Each one thickens the floor beneath them, ready to withstand the upcoming changes in their new home.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-3-expect-emotional-reactions-to-show-up-later"><strong>3. Expect Emotional Reactions to Show Up Later</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s a common story: during the move, the children thrive,d but then, suddenly, after 6 or 8 weeks, something changed.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This</strong> is often one of the most misunderstood parts of moving abroad with kids.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many children cope well during the planning, packing and arrival. There’s adrenaline from the adventure.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your new home is novel and there are hundreds of distractions to keep them busy.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But later, as you settle into your new normal, your child’s emotions come to the surface. It can look different for every child, but you might notice:&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-regression" class="">Regression.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-clinginess" class="">Clinginess.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-tantrums" class="">Tantrums.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-withdrawal" class="">Withdrawal.<br></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="731" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-731x1024.webp" alt="A young boy with his face in his hands as he processes the big move abroad." class="wp-image-1938" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-731x1024.webp 731w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-214x300.webp 214w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-768x1076.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later.webp 914w" sizes="(max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a sign that your child’s feelings have “caught up”. The novelty has worn off and the distractions are gone.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Now</em> is the time that homesickness may show its face, along with other emotional challenges.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/my-first-month-in-germany/">I wish I’d known this during my first month in Germany.</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If this happens, it doesn’t mean the move was a mistake. It means their system is catching up and they need you <em>now</em>.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-4-involve-them-but-gently"><strong>4. Involve Them But Gently</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children need agency in their lives, <em>even</em> in major transitions that seem to be “grown-up decisions”.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The important part here is <em>what</em> they have agency over.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let them:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-choose-a-few-items-to-pack-in-their-arrival-bag" class="">Choose a few items to pack in their “arrival bag”<br></li>

<li id="htoc-help-plan-how-their-new-room-might-look" class="">Help plan how their new room might look<br></li>

<li id="htoc-research-playgrounds-or-activities-in-their-new-home" class="">Research playgrounds or activities in their new home.<br></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="682" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-682x1024.webp" alt="A child with her own backpack for her international move." class="wp-image-1939" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-682x1024.webp 682w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-200x300.webp 200w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-768x1152.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack.webp 853w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But avoid placing <em>emotional</em> responsibility on them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your child should never feel responsible for making the move “work”.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Their job is to remain children, following your lead as their parent.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your job is to pave the way and build a strong foundation for your family to stand on in your new home.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-5-create-emotional-anchors-before-you-leave"><strong>5. Create Emotional Anchors Before You Leave</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Goodbyes matter. <em>For everyone</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whenever possible:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-visit-favourite-places-intentionally" class="">Visit favourite places intentionally.<br></li>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Transitional objects help, too. Consider prioritising the packing of:&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-familiar-blanket-or-cuddle-toy" class="">Familiar blanket or cuddle toy.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-a-favourite-mug" class="">A favourite mug.<br></li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children don’t need everything in their new home. They need a few things that say: <em>home still exists inside this change.&nbsp;</em></p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-6-regulate-yourself-first"><strong>6. Regulate Yourself First</strong></h2>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one is often the hardest.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children look to their primary caregiver to manage their big feelings. They listen to the tone of your voice, your posture, and your breathing.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without realising it, they’re calm when you’re calm and losing it when they sense <em>you’re</em> not coping.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fair? Not really, especially when you have so much already on the go.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t need to be perfectly calm all of the time, but if you are chronically overwhelmed and stressed, they <em>will</em> feel it.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And you will, too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Preparing your children emotionally for relocation starts with protecting your own capacity. Capacity to manage stress, roll with the punches and to be needed.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Because you will be needed.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That might mean:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-reducing-commitments-before-the-move" class="">Reducing commitments before the move.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-seeking-support-early-at-home-and-in-your-new-home-because-building-an-expat-support-network-matters" class="">Seeking support early, at home and in your new home, because <a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/expat-support-network/">building an expat support network matters</a>.<br></li>

</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You are allowed to feel grief and hope at the same time.</p>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-7-what-emotional-preparation-is-not"><strong>7. What Emotional Preparation Is NOT</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Preparing yourself and your children for this emotional transition is <em>not:</em></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-ignoring-sadness-grief-or-mixed-feelings" class="">Ignoring sadness, grief or mixed feelings.&nbsp;<br></li>

<li id="htoc-convincing-your-child-that-life-in-your-new-home-will-be-better" class="">Convincing your child that life in your new home will be “better”.&nbsp;<br></li>

<li id="htoc-preventing-every-challenge-or-difficulty-your-child-may-experience-through-this-transition" class="">Preventing every challenge or difficulty your child may experience through this transition.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An international move <em>is</em> disruptive and many challenges that it brings can be planned for.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Emotional Preparation means that this transition doesn’t need to feel frightening, isolating or too big to handle.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-you-can-t-remove-all-stress-but-you-can-soften-it"><strong>You Can’t Remove All Stress, But You Can Soften It</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Relocating internationally with your kids will stretch you all in ways you couldn’t have imagined.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Life in your new home probably won’t be perfect, but it likely won’t be the worst decision you’ve ever made, either.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your child will move through this transition and adapt more easily when they feel:&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-informed" class="">informed<br></li>

<li id="htoc-included" class="">included<br></li>

<li id="htoc-emotionally-validated" class="">emotionally validated<br></li>

<li id="htoc-and-anchored-to-you" class="">and anchored to you<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you’re reading this, wondering whether you’re doing enough, the fact that you’re thinking about their emotional well-being already says a great deal about the kind of parent you are.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t have to get this perfect.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For many families, packing feels like the final hurdle.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Suddenly, you’re standing surrounded by things that made your home, well, home, trying to decide what comes with you. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I remember standing and staring, paralysed by decision and the emotional weight of every item in front of me. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s not like packing for a holiday. It‘s not even similar to moving house locally.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Packing for life abroad isn’t just about moving your belongings from one place to another. It makes you consider:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-what-will-help-my-children-feel-safe-in-unfamiliar-surroundings" class="">What will help my children feel safe in unfamiliar surroundings?<br></li>

<li id="htoc-what-routines-can-we-carry-with-us" class="">What routines can we carry with us?<br></li>

<li id="htoc-what-will-i-wish-i-d-kept-when-everything-feels-new" class="">What will I wish I’d kept when everything feels new?<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a relocation coach supporting professional mothers through international transitions, I’ve experienced the challenge of each and everyone of these decisions, and have spoken to plenty of parents wondering “where do I even start?”. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Packing is where practical preparation and emotional readiness meet. When it’s rushed or underestimated, you might be left feeling overwhelmed and confused.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This guide isn’t about packing <em>everything</em>. It’s about packing <strong>what matters most</strong> so your family can land more steadily in your new life abroad.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-why-thoughtful-packing-makes-a-real-difference"><strong>Why Thoughtful Packing Makes a Real Difference</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you relocate abroad with children, you’re not just moving things from one house to the next.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re carrying:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-familiarity" class="">familiarity<br></li>

<li id="htoc-comfort" class="">comfort<br></li>

<li id="htoc-emotional-anchors" class="">emotional anchors<br></li>

<li id="htoc-the-small-details-that-help-everyone-feel-grounded" class="">the small details that help everyone feel grounded<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the first weeks after your move, those small things matter more than many families expect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The moment the boxes arrived and I found my favourite ceramic mug, a gift from one of my closest and oldest friends, I an indescribable thrill. Even now, that mug brings me so much comfort when I’m having a <a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/homesick-parent/">bout of homesickness</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We all need a few items that bring comfort, even when everything feels new and scary.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s also the practical reality many families underestimate: replacing forgotten items abroad can be expensive, time-consuming, or unexpectedly difficult.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Brands differ. Availability varies. Systems work differently.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But beyond cost and convenience, there’s an emotional layer too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children don’t always react to big changes right away. Often, it’s the absence of something small and familiar that brings the transition into sharp focus. Packing with intention helps soften the landing for all of you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you move on, pause for a moment:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What one item from home would help your family feel more settled in the first week?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make a note. That’s your starting point.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-essential-documents-to-keep-with-you-not-in-shipping"><strong>Essential Documents to Keep With You (Not in Shipping)</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No matter where you’re moving, some items should never be packed away in shipped boxes.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-clothing-packing-for-an-unfamiliar-climate"><strong>Clothing: Packing for an Unfamiliar Climate</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the trickiest parts of my international move was packing for the Winter. Coming from Australia, I’d <em>never</em> experienced a Northern Hemisphere Winter.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/The-Ultimate-Packing-Guide-for-Families-Moving-Abroad-Packing-for-new-Climates-1024x682.webp" alt="Child playing in snow after relocating abroad with her family to a new climate. <div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even though I’d researched the climate (and my husband is German!), my experience of the seasons was very different to my expectations.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This can be true of seasons, temperatures and humidity. If you’re not yet accustomed to the climate, packing for it is <em>hard</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rather than packing for extremes, focus on <strong>flexibility</strong>.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pack familiar, well-loved outfits.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Familiarity often matters more than practicality in the early weeks.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For children, school clothing usually requires:</p>

</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Uniforms are the exception rather than the rule in many countries.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Expectations around outdoor play, walking, and independence though, can be higher than families anticipate.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-the-things-families-most-often-wish-they-d-packed"><strong>The Things Families Most Often Wish They’d Packed</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every family is different, but certain items come up again and again in conversations with parents after a move.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are the things that tend to support emotional regulation and daily ease in the early weeks:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-comfort-items-for-children-soft-toys-books-blankets" class="">Comfort items for children (soft toys, books, blankets)<br></li>

<li id="htoc-a-pram-stroller-or-baby-carrier-if-age-appropriate" class="">A pram, stroller, or baby carrier if age-appropriate<br></li>

<li id="htoc-a-small-family-medicine-kit-with-trusted-basics" class="">A small family medicine kit with trusted basics<br></li>

<li id="htoc-prescription-medications-for-the-first-few-weeks" class="">Prescription medications for the first few weeks<br></li>

<li id="htoc-school-or-learning-supplies-your-children-already-use" class="">School or learning supplies your children already use<br></li>

<li id="htoc-essential-digital-devices-and-chargers" class="">Essential digital devices and chargers<br><br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">💡 <strong>Helpful idea:</strong><strong><br></strong> Let children pack a small “arrival bag” with items they choose themselves. This sense of agency can make a meaningful difference during transition.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-household-items-worth-bringing-from-home"><strong>Household Items Worth Bringing From Home</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While minimalism is often encouraged when moving abroad, some household items are worth prioritising, particularly if you’re sensitive to quality, comfort, or familiarity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Common examples include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-favourite-spices-or-pantry-basics" class="">Favourite spices or pantry basics<br></li>

<li id="htoc-pillows-or-bedding-that-support-good-sleep" class="">Pillows or bedding that support good sleep<br></li>

<li id="htoc-power-adapters-and-voltage-converters" class="">Power adapters and voltage converters<br></li>

<li id="htoc-small-appliances-with-personal-value" class="">Small appliances with personal value<br></li>

<li id="htoc-kitchen-tools-you-rely-on-daily" class="">Kitchen tools you rely on daily<br><br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Large appliances and furniture are often better sourced locally, once you understand space, compatibility, and lifestyle norms.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-your-first-week-transition-kit"><strong>Your First-Week Transition Kit</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No matter how organised you are, international moves rarely go exactly to plan.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Luggage can be delayed. Shipments can arrive late. Temporary accommodation can feel disorienting.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A dedicated transition kit ensures your family has what it needs even if everything else is delayed.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t forget to include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-several-days-of-clothing-for-each-family-member" class="">Several days of clothing for each family member<br></li>

<li id="htoc-basic-toiletries" class="">Basic toiletries<br></li>

<li id="htoc-bedtime-essentials" class="">Bedtime essentials<br></li>

<li id="htoc-chargers-and-adapters" class="">Chargers and adapters<br></li>

<li id="htoc-important-documents-and-valuables" class="">Important documents and valuables<br><br><br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ask yourself:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-what-would-be-hardest-to-replace-quickly" class="">What would be hardest to replace quickly?<br></li>

<li id="htoc-what-helps-us-function-when-tired-and-overwhelmed" class="">What helps us function when tired and overwhelmed?<br><br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start there.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="682" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/The-Ultimate-Packing-Guide-for-Families-Moving-Abroad-what-not-to-pack-682x1024.webp" alt="A Mother taping up a moving box before her relocation with her family abroad." class="wp-image-1910" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/The-Ultimate-Packing-Guide-for-Families-Moving-Abroad-what-not-to-pack-682x1024.webp 682w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/The-Ultimate-Packing-Guide-for-Families-Moving-Abroad-what-not-to-pack-200x300.webp 200w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/The-Ultimate-Packing-Guide-for-Families-Moving-Abroad-what-not-to-pack-768x1152.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/The-Ultimate-Packing-Guide-for-Families-Moving-Abroad-what-not-to-pack.webp 853w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-what-not-to-pack-when-moving-abroad"><strong>What Not to Pack When Moving Abroad</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Just as important as what you bring is what you leave behind.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In most cases, it’s best to avoid packing:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-bulky-low-value-furniture" class="">bulky, low-value furniture<br></li>

<li id="htoc-rarely-used-medications" class="">rarely used medications<br></li>

<li id="htoc-clothing-for-future-seasons-especially-for-children-they-grow-so-fast" class="">clothing for future seasons (especially for children, they grow so fast!)<br><br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In many countries, secondhand markets and local buying options are far more accessible than families expect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Less really is more during international transitions.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-final-packing-advice-for-families"><strong>Final Packing Advice for Families</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s not easy and it can be overwhelming. As Mothers, we want to get <em>everything</em> right. We want to do the best and be the best for our kids.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are my last tips to get you started and take away any of that sneaky overwhelm that always finds it’s way into our major life decisions:&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-start-earlier-than-you-think-you-need-to" class="">Start earlier than you think you need to<br></li>

<li id="htoc-be-selective-not-sentimental" class="">Be selective, not sentimental<br></li>

<li id="htoc-label-clearly-and-specifically" class="">Label clearly and specifically<br></li>

<li id="htoc-involve-your-children-where-possible" class="">Involve your children where possible<br></li>

<li id="htoc-pace-yourself-packing-is-demanding" class="">Pace yourself — packing is demanding<br><br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most importantly: remember that packing is just one part of the transition.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<pre class="wp-block-verse has-text-align-center has-ast-global-color-3-color has-ast-global-color-0-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-31a676f2636de8b3b3e68929a4f902a5"><strong>We’re not aiming for perfection. <em>Good enough will do.</em></strong></pre>

<div style="height:80px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-you-don-t-have-to-figure-this-out-alone"><strong>You Don’t Have to Figure This Out Alone</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moving abroad as a family reshapes routines, identities, and expectations, not just addresses.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’d like structured support through the emotional and practical side of relocation, my work focuses on helping professional mothers navigate this transition with clarity and steadiness.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Download the <a href="https://breatheinbetween.kit.com/4619dbe764">Expat Starter Kit </a>to support your first months abroad</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re doing something brave for your family.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Take it one step at a time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moving to Germany with kids brings with it <em>a lot</em> of questions. One of the biggest being: What’s the best school for my kids?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Local public schools offer full language and cultural immersion, while international schools provide familiarity with language and approach.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This choice sparks debate for a reason—your child’s schooling will shape not just their education, but how easily they build friendships and settle into life in Germany.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With many competing but equally valid priorities, it isn’t always easy to decide the best option for your child.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In this post, I’ll walk you through the key differences between the public schools in Germany and its International Schools. I’ll also share tips to help you choose what’s best for your kids and family.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:0px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-overview-of-the-german-school-system">Overview of the German School System</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Germany’s education system is known for its structure and academic rigour—but for newcomers, it can feel complex and overwhelming.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Known locally as the <em>Bildungssystem</em>, the German school system comprises several stages with varying aims and outcomes for students.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If, like me, you’re from a country where children attend primary school and then secondary school, then this system might take a little bit of getting used to!&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s a quick overview:</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-krippe-2-3-years"><strong>Krippe (2 &#8211; 3 years)&nbsp;</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While not compulsory, toddler childcare is widely used in Germany. While generally not academically oriented, children attending Krippe will be exposed to a range of activities that aim to build their motor and social skills.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-kindergarten-3-6-years">Kindergarten (3–6 years)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Preschool years are not compulsory but like Krippe, are widely attended. Activities are generally more targeted to build specific, age-appropriate skills. Parents will receive feedback and recommendations if children are observed to need extra support in any area.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-vorschule-ages-5-7">Vorschule (ages 5 &#8211; 7)</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The last of the preschool years is the foundation year for school. Attending may be compulsory in your state. Children are increasingly taught the routines and structures common in school, to prepare them for their first school year.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-grundschule-ages-6-10"><strong>Grundschule (ages 6–10)</strong></h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-primary-school-from-first-to-fourth-grade" class="">Primary school from first to fourth grade.<br>&nbsp;</li>

<li id="htoc-it-is-common-for-children-to-remain-in-the-same-group-with-the-same-teacher-for-the-full-four-years" class="">It is common for children to remain in the same group, with the same teacher for the full four years.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-all-children-must-attend-grundschule-from-the-age-of-six-years-old" class="">All children <em>must</em> attend Grundschule from the age of six years old.&nbsp;<br></li>

With special permission, children may also begin school early.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong><em>“Oberschule”</em></strong> is a type of secondary school, typically found in Germany’s Eastern states of Saxony, Sachsen-Anhalt and Brandenburg, which combines the <em>Hauptschule</em> and <em>Realschule</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Public schools in Germany are free, though there are still other costs to be covered by a student&#8217;s family. For example, the cost of excursions and books.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Public schools here follow state-specific curriculums and are taught almost entirely in German, which can be a big adjustment—especially in the early months.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is minimal flexibility or adaptation for students who are not native speakers, though increasingly schools are offering classes tailored to <em>DaZ</em> (Deutsch als Zweitsprache &#8211; German as a foreign language) students.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:53px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">International schools in Germany cater to expat families and worldly-minded local families by offering internationally recognised curricula.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most commonly International Schools offer one of the following qualifications:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-international-baccalaureate-ib" class="">&nbsp;<strong>International Baccalaureate </strong>(IB)<strong><br></strong></li>

<li id="htoc-british-curriculum-igcse-a-levels" class=""><strong>British curriculum</strong> (IGCSE, A-Levels)<br></li>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">International Schools typically:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-teach-in-english" class="">Teach in <strong>English.</strong><br></li>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">International schools are particularly popular in larger German cities like Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and Hamburg, reflecting the multicultural population of these cities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Designed to provide seamless education for students from around the world, International Schools support students who may be relocating frequently, or who will be returning to their home country in the future.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-key-considerations-for-expat-families">Key Considerations for Expat Families</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Choosing the education system that’s best for your kids isn’t just about academic outcomes. It’s also about finding a school that matches your values as a family, your child’s personality and ambitions and your family’s long-term goals.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are a few questions to consider before making a final decision:</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-1-how-long-will-we-stay-in-germany">1. How long will we stay in Germany?</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-if-your-stay-is-short-1-3-years-international-schools-may-provide-a-smoother-transition" class="">If your stay is short (1–3 years), international schools may provide a smoother transition.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-if-you-plan-to-settle-long-term-public-schools-support-deeper-language-learning-and-cultural-integration" class="">If you plan to settle long-term, public schools support deeper language learning and cultural integration.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:51px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-2-how-old-is-our-child-and-do-they-speak-german">2. How old is our child &#8211; and do they speak German?</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-young-children-often-pick-up-german-quickly-and-may-thrive-in-public-schools" class="">Young children often pick up German quickly and may thrive in public schools.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-older-kids-or-teens-might-benefit-from-the-educational-consistency-of-an-international-school" class="">Older kids or teens might benefit from the educational consistency of an international school.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:46px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-3-do-we-want-cultural-immersion-or-continuity">3. Do we want cultural immersion or continuity?</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-public-schools-offer-full-immersion-in-german-life-and-friendships-with-local-peers" class="">Public schools offer full immersion in German life and friendships with local peers.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-international-schools-provide-familiarity-with-language-teaching-methods-and-global-peer-groups" class="">International schools provide familiarity with language, teaching methods, and global peer groups.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-4-what-s-our-budget">4. What’s our budget?</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-public-schools-are-free-with-small-incidental-costs" class="">Public schools are free (with small incidental costs).<br></li>

<li id="htoc-international-schools-charge-tuition-which-can-be-significant-especially-with-more-than-one-child" class="">International schools charge tuition, which can be significant—especially with more than one child.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-5-where-will-our-child-thrive">5. Where will our child thrive?</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-some-children-embrace-change-and-thrive-in-a-new-system" class="">Some children embrace change and thrive in a new system.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-others-feel-more-secure-with-familiar-structures-and-language-consider-involving-your-child-in-the-decision-if-age-appropriate" class="">Others feel more secure with familiar structures and language. Consider involving your child in the decision if age-appropriate.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-my-experience">My Experience&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once we moved past the initial challenge of learning the system and how to apply for a place at Krippe, we had to decide: a local Kindergarten, a bi-lingual Kindergarten or an international kindergarten?</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-why-we-chose-local-kindergarten">Why We Chose Local Kindergarten</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It made sense for us to use a local kindergarten &#8211; it was in our neighbourhood, we’d heard positive feedback about it and most importantly: there was a spot!&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The major benefit of the International Krippe was that they spoke exclusively English. However, one of our main reasons for being in Germany was for our daughter to be bi-lingual. As I speak English with her at home, we felt comfortable with her being educated in only German.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-our-decision-for-primary-school">Our Decision for Primary School</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fast forward to now and she’s no longer a Krippe kid! Primary School is now mere months away and we’ve done the hard yards of researching schools, weighing up our options and have again decided in favour of a local school where she will be educated in German.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-why-we-chose-a-freieschule">Why We Chose a <em>Freieschule</em></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A <em>Freieschule</em> is equivalent to a private school. It is not prestigious like private schools in Australia or other countries but rather offers a specific pedagogical approach that differs from mainstream schooling.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It wasn’t that we were unsatisfied with the mainstream Grundschule, but that this specific school offered a range of benefits that we felt suited our daughter and would encourage her ongoing development as a whole person, not just academically.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For us, it was important to remain in a multi-cultural setting, which this school offers us. In addition, it focuses on developing <em>people</em>, not just <em>learners</em>. There is a high priority placed on creative and flexible thinking, something that we value.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This was a hard decision and took a <em>lot</em> of discussion, investigation and negotiation between my husband and me. But I’m comfortable with the decision and am excited to see what the next chapter of my daughter’s life brings.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If there’s one thing I’ve learned, the ‘best’ choice looks different for every family—and that’s okay.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-questions-for-you-before-choosing">Questions for YOU before choosing&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As with all major decisions, your first step should be to be clear on your goals and expectations. In this case, you need to be sure that you and your partner are on the same page about all aspects of your move to Germany.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ask yourselves the following questions to help you gain clarity in your decision:<br></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-what-do-we-want-our-child-ren-to-gain-from-their-experience-in-germany" class=""><strong>What do we want our child/ren to gain from their experience in Germany?</strong><strong><br></strong><strong><br></strong></li>

<li id="htoc-is-it-important-that-they-become-fluent-in-german-if-so-why-how-would-you-define-fluent" class=""><strong>Is it important that they become fluent in German? If so, why? How would you define </strong><strong><em>fluent</em></strong><strong>?</strong><strong><br></strong><strong><br></strong></li>

<li id="htoc-how-long-are-we-planning-to-stay" class=""><strong>How long are we planning to stay? </strong><strong><br></strong><strong><br></strong></li>

<li id="htoc-thinking-ahead-what-academic-qualifications-will-best-help-my-kids-reach-their-dream-goals" class=""><strong>Thinking ahead, what academic qualifications will best help my kids reach their dream goals? </strong><strong><br></strong><strong><br></strong></li>

<li id="htoc-can-we-afford-an-international-school-or-would-a-public-school-offering-additional-language-assistance-be-suitable" class=""><strong>Can we afford an international school? Or would a public school, offering additional language assistance, be suitable?</strong></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-last-thoughts-on-public-schools-vs-international-schools-in-germany">Last Thoughts on Public Schools vs International Schools in Germany&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Making this decision feels hard because it <em>is</em> hard.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But remember: there’s no one <em>right</em> choice. This decision needs to be made with <em>your child</em> and <em>your family</em> in mind.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What’s best for you and your family might not be right for the other expat family down the street.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Making a decision that supports your child’s needs comes from weighing up your values, needs and long-term goals for your family.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to <a href="https://www.numbeo.com/crime/rankings_current.jsp?displayColumn=1">Numbeo’s 2024 rankings</a>, Munich has one of the lowest crime rates among major cities in Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is also a melting pot of people from all over the world, with nearly 50% of the population having a migration background, meaning that building your <a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/expat-support-network/">expat support network</a> is easy.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A top-tier education system for your kids is also on offer, as well as plenty of public parks, a well-connected public transport system and the best bit? You’re only a short drive from the breathtaking Mountains and Lakes of Southern Germany, Austria and Italy.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the airport, with my passport in hand, tears in my eyes and my baby in my arms, I wondered, “Have we made the right decision?”. I suddenly questioned if what we’d decided to do was, in fact, the right decision. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>My confidence was already wavering.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<div style="height:31px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form" style=""><script async data-uid="52e365d1bf" src="https://breatheinbetween.kit.com/52e365d1bf/index.js" data-jetpack-boost="ignore" data-no-defer="1" data-no-optimize="1" nowprocket></script></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Was I really going to drag my daughter to the other side of the world? Was this what I really wanted?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, after more than five years living in Germany, I can say that the decision <em>was</em> right, even if at the beginning it felt anything but.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like most families preparing for an international move, we planned carefully.<br>The packing. The visas. The logistics. The research into work, childcare, and life abroad.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center has-ast-global-color-0-color has-ast-global-color-3-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-d75a82308165fd726eae407463bac708 wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What I didn’t fully plan for was how deeply the move would change me.</strong></p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not just as a professional. Not just as a partner. But as a mother finding her footing in unfamiliar ground.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is my story about moving to Germany but reallyit could be your story. It’s a story about what happens <em>inside</em> a family when everything familiar disappears at once.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re planning a move, or already navigating life abroad with children, I hope this helps you see what’s normal, what’s hard, and why none of it means that you’ve failed.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:60px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:60px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-but-why-germany"><strong><strong>Why We Chose Germany (and the Weight of Wanting to “Get It Right”)</strong>&nbsp;</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">TGermany wasn’t a random choice for us.<br>It was carefully considered — professionally, practically, and financially.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We believed it would offer opportunity, stability, and a rich cultural experience for our family. And in many ways, it has.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But looking back, I can see how much pressure I placed on myself to <em>make it work</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not just the country.<br>Not just the logistics.<br>But motherhood itself — as if choosing to move meant I had to prove it was worth the disruption.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That quiet pressure followed me long after we arrived.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-facing-the-hard-truths-of-change"><strong><strong>The Reality of Expat Motherhood: When Everything Familiar Is Gone</strong></strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I expected the move to be hard. Like, <em>really</em> hard. If nothing else, I accepted that learning a new language would be a tough starting point.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What I didn’t expect was how disorienting it would feel to have all of my markers of independence disappear overnight.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those early days were lonely. Caring for my daughter while my husband worked was lonely. Every day needed me to be brave, even the unremarkable ones.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I missed my friends. I grieved the ease of the familiar. And underneath it all was guilt. I felt guilty for choosing this life for us and couldn’t stop asking the question “Did I make the right decision?”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I began questioning myself constantly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Had we made a mistake?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Had <em>I</em> made a mistake thinking I could parent abroad when I was still learning how to parent at all?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On top of these confidence crushing questions came the logistics of day-to-day life: finding an apartment, navigating systems I didn’t understand, attending appointments in a language I couldn’t yet speak, all the while wondering “when will this get easier?”.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I didn’t recognise myself anymore.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I felt like I had transformed from being a capable, confident woman to a child needing support to achieve even the most basic tasks.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This wasn’t the expat motherhood journey I thought I’d signed up for.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My identity felt shaken, and learning how to be a mother at the same time only intensified that feeling.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you recognise yourself in this experience, then I want you to know that:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re not alone and there is <strong><em>nothing</em></strong> wrong with you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is what ongoing change does to us (yes, even you).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So much of adult confidence is built on familiarity:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-my-personal-transformation"><strong>When Your Child Adapts Faster Than You</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the hardest moments for me came when my daughter started daycare.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She cried at drop-off and tears flowed freely from my eyes as I left the daycare centre.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I felt like a failure and I couldn’t even explain <em>why</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But then, just like that, she adjusted.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">She learned the language faster than I did (it’s so <em>easy</em> for kids!). Friends were made and her confidence grew and grew.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Watching her taught me something that I’d always known in theory, but hadn’t yet experienced:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What helped me wasn’t pushing harder or trying to “be more resilient.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, I lean into the confidence I’ve built over the last five years and trust myself to keep learning. To keep going. Because <em>that’s</em> what has got me this far.&nbsp;</p>

<li id="htoc-you-don-t-have-to-do-it-alone-it-takes-a-village-to-raise-a-child-you-just-have-to-find-yours-now-meeting-other-mums-even-the-german-ones-is-empowering-this-above-all-is-the-lesson-i-hope-you-can-take-from-my-writing-today" class=""><strong>You don’t have to do it alone </strong>— It takes a village to raise a child. You just have to find yours now. Meeting other Mums, even the German ones, is empowering. This, above all, is the lesson I hope you can take from my writing today.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-knowledge-is-power-the-bureaucracy-might-feel-overwhelming-right-now-but-with-the-right-support-you-will-be-able-to-do-it-all-the-first-time-i-could-attend-an-appointment-alone-and-got-it-right-was-the-day-i-knew-i-d-made-it" class=""><strong>Knowledge is power </strong>— The bureaucracy might feel overwhelming right now, but with the right support, you <em>will</em> be able to do it all. The first time I could attend an appointment alone and <em>got it right</em> was the day I knew <em>I’d made it</em>.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-motherhood-can-expand-not-shrink-abroad-it-s-a-blessing-and-not-a-shame-to-grow-with-your-children-you-don-t-have-to-have-it-all-figured-out-yet-there-s-a-unique-bond-that-comes-with-discovering-life-with-your-children-not-simply-showing-it-to-them" class=""><strong>Motherhood can expand, not shrink, abroad </strong>— It’s a blessing and not a shame to grow <em>with</em> your children. You don’t have to have it all figured out yet. There’s a unique bond that comes with discovering life <em>with</em> your children, not simply <em>showing</em> it to them.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-we-all-feel-lost-sometimes-and-it-s-ok-that-s-where-powerful-change-happens-but-don-t-let-yourself-stay-in-that-dark-place-for-too-long-lost-is-best-visited-and-quickly-left-behind-whenever-i-feel-like-that-i-try-to-remember-that-sinking-in-the-swamp-of-confusion-won-t-change-my-situation-but-being-curious-about-it-will" class=""><strong>We all feel lost sometimes </strong>— And it’s ok! That’s where powerful change happens. But don’t let yourself stay in that dark place for too long &#8211; lost is best visited and quickly left behind. Whenever I feel like that, I try to remember that sinking in the swamp of confusion won’t change my situation but being curious about it <em>will</em>.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-the-life-you-want-abroad-won-t-build-itself-but-you-can-build-it-one-intentional-step-after-the-next-no-matter-how-small-that-first-step-is-it-s-a-step-in-the-right-direction-this-is-your-life-so-make-it-one-to-be-proud-of" class=""><strong>The life you want abroad won’t build itself </strong>— But <em>you</em> can build it, one intentional step after the next. No matter <em>how small</em> that first step is, it’s a step in the right direction. This is <em>your</em> life, so make it one to be proud of!</li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And always remember that it takes <em>time</em>. You need time to adjust, learn and to start building the life of your dreams.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yikes!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But you’ve decided to move to Germany. Now what?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The challenges of moving abroad are not only the logistics of “what should I pack?” and booking your flights.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Things to consider include:&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-administrative-challenges"><a href="#Administrative-Challenges"><strong>Administrative Challenges</strong>&nbsp;</a></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Visas, dealing with local authorities, health insurance, the education system. It’s a <em>long</em> list of things to manage.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-cultural-challenges"><strong><a href="#Cultural-Challenges">Cultural Challenges&nbsp;</a></strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Language barriers and cultural differences can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness or even frustration and anger.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-family-challenges"><strong><a href="#Family-Challenges">Family Challenges&nbsp;</a></strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each member of the family will experience the relocation differently and require differing levels of support to manage feelings of homesickness, loss, grief and navigating their new life abroad.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having someone by your side with local knowledge, language skills and personal experience as an expat in Germany ensures that your relocation to Germany is seamless. Let’s ensure you’re not one of the “loneliest and unhappiest” expats in Germany!</p>

<div style="height:60px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-top-benefits-of-personalized-relocation-services-to-germany">Top Benefits of Personalized Relocation Services to Germany</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every relocation experience is unique. The success of a relocation depends on many factors, including:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-personal-motivations-for-the-relocation" class="">Personal motivations for the relocation,<br></li>

<li id="htoc-individual-expectations-of-a-new-life-in-the-new-city" class="">Individual expectations of a new life in the new city,<br></li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are the top three benefits of personalized relocation services for your family’s relocation to Germany.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form" style=""><script async data-uid="52e365d1bf" src="https://breatheinbetween.kit.com/52e365d1bf/index.js" data-jetpack-boost="ignore" data-no-defer="1" data-no-optimize="1" nowprocket></script></div>

<div style="height:49px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-1-personalized-advice-and-emotional-support">1. Personalized Advice and Emotional Support&nbsp;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re the expert in <em>your</em> situation. Only you know your motivations for moving abroad and your goals for your new life.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Personalized relocation services mean your goals and priorities will become my goals and priorities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Could you do all of the packing, list-making and appointment setting yourself? Of course you can! But why make the To-Do lists, the research <em>and</em> the leg-work when I can do it for you? Besides, I’ve <em>already</em> done it before.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:49px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-2-saves-you-time">2. Saves You Time</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With so many competing priorities for you and your family, where do you start? Do you start with the easiest task or the most important? Will you begin with the logistics or the bureaucracy?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Using relocation services for expats in Germany will save you time. No more hours spent staring at your screen, switching tabs or flicking through that pile of paper.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Personalized relocation services to Germany is your short-cut to understanding exactly <em>what</em> needs to happen and <em>when</em>. You can ask me questions anytime and know that the answer will be tailored to your unique circumstances.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No more time wasted scrolling through Facebook Groups or Reddit threads.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-3-no-language-barrier">3. No Language Barrier</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unless you already speak German, the language barrier is <em>real</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bureaucrats here are only allowed to work with people <em>in Germany</em>. That makes it tough for new arrivals without local language skills or a trusted local who can act as an interpreter.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I know what you’re thinking. “I’ll just use Google Translate!”.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The trouble is that many words, particularly in German bureaucracy, <em>cannot</em> be properly translated. Specific processes, documents and permissions <em>only</em> exist in Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A key resource in your personalised relocation support to Germany is quick reference guides to these terms.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-common-challenges-when-moving-to-germany">Common Challenges When Moving to Germany&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are some of the most common challenges families face when they relocate to Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="Administrative-Challenges">Administrative Challenges&nbsp;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In <a href="https://www.internations.org/expat-insider/2023/germany-40368?__cf_chl_tk=LbSRw0PJ8gYzQ422OLJ.oT9TR19hWgfeAuyLRk47IGc-1733743038-1.0.1.1-5stu0tv1HXuWw7SoKCuGY2YJb2fGaveis4uU8AHXZYo">this</a> survey, one of expats’ biggest challenges is managing everyday tasks and bureaucracy with 56% of respondents naming the local bureaucracy as a key challenge to their settlement in Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Not only is there a lot of bureaucracy to manage, it’s all paper-based and often can only be completed in person.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Examples of administrative challenges include:&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-finding-an-apartment-in-germany" class="">Finding an Apartment in Germany<br></li>

<li id="htoc-managing-your-visa-through-the-ausl-derbeh-rde" class="">Managing your visa through the <em>Ausläderbehörde</em><br></li>

<li id="htoc-driving-in-germany" class=""><a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/driving-in-germany-as-a-foreigner/">Driving in Germany</a> </li>
</ul>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having a familiar voice in Germany to talk you through these processes takes the pressure off you, so you can focus on supporting your family through the settlement period.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><em><a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/german-bureaucracy/">Read my post to prepare for success with German Bureaucracy.</a></em></p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="Cultural-Challenges">Cultural Challenges</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Experiencing homesickness, social isolation due to cultural differences or discrimination and language barriers are very real challenges for expat families who have relocated to Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">50% of survey respondents found life in Germany difficult without German language skills, compared to the global average of 32%.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Aside from the challenges of learning German, other cultural challenges for expats in Germany might include:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-social-interactions-for-example-there-is-no-small-talk-with-strangers" class=""><strong>Social interactions.</strong> For example, there is <em>no</em> small talk with strangers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br></li>

In Saxony where I live, less than 10% of the population are foreign-born. These figures are striking if you’re from a country like Canada (<a href="https://www.statista.com/topics/2917/immigration-in-canada/#topicOverview">20%</a> immigrant population) or Australia (<a href="https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/people/population/australias-population-country-birth/latest-release#:~:text=As%20at%2030%20June%202023,8.2%20million%20people%20born%20overseas.">30%</a> immigrant population).</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While every new expat in Germany will have to navigate these challenges, I can help prepare you for them before you arrive and counsel you through them as you experience them in <em>real life</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="Family-Challenges">Family Challenges&nbsp;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The dynamics of your family will play a central role in everyone’s smooth relocation and settlement experience in Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some common challenges experienced by expats when they arrive in Germany are:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After five years in Germany, I’ve cracked the code to successfully managing Germany’s infamous bureaucracy. </p>

</div>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Until you’ve lived here, it’s hard to believe the tail-chasing systems Germany relies on to keep it functioning. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Like that time the Ausländerbehörde sent me details of an appointment at BAMF. I arrived and was given details for another appointment at BAMF. Where I was, already. That was an adventure.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the years I’ve heard a lot of foreigners complain about the systems. I get it. The processes are tedious. It’s all <em>actual </em>paperwork. A lot of it makes <em>no</em> sense.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, complaining won’t change it and we still have to go through the motions as long as we want to live here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here is your game-plan for success with German bureaucracy.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><em>If you want more about the struggles of living abroad, read my post <a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/why-living-abroad-sucks/">Why Living Abroad Sucks (and how I got over it)</a></em></p>

<div class="is-style-rounded wp-block-ht-block-toc htoc htoc--position-wide toc-list-style-plain" data-htoc-state="closed" data-htoc-scrollspy="false"><span class="htoc__title"><span class="ht_toc_title">Table of Contents</span><span class="htoc__toggle"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="16" height="16"><g fill="#444"><path d="M15 7H1c-.6 0-1 .4-1 1s.4 1 1 1h14c.6 0 1-.4 1-1s-.4-1-1-1z"></path><path d="M15 1H1c-.6 0-1 .4-1 1s.4 1 1 1h14c.6 0 1-.4 1-1s-.4-1-1-1zM15 13H1c-.6 0-1 .4-1 1s.4 1 1 1h14c.6 0 1-.4 1-1s-.4-1-1-1z"></path></g></svg></span></span><div class="htoc__itemswrap"><ul class="ht_toc_list"><li class=""><a href="#htoc-why-family-vacations-aren-t-always-fun-for-mums">Why Family Vacations Aren’t Always Fun for Mums</a></li><li class=""><a href="#htoc-the-mindset-shift-that-changes-everything">The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything</a></li><li class=""><a href="#htoc-practical-tips-for-stress-free-travel-for-moms">Practical Tips for Stress-Free Travel for Moms</a></li><li class=""><a href="#htoc-kids-emotional-needs-your-sanity">Kids’ Emotional Needs = Your Sanity</a></li><li class=""><a href="#htoc-resources">Resources</a></li></ul></div></div>

<div style="height:80px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-step-1-find-the-right-office-because-yes-there-are-many">STEP 1: Find the right office (because, yes, there are many!)&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your first step on this mission &#8211; should you choose to accept it &#8211; is to find out exactly which authority handles your application. Yes, it’s like a game of Guess Who, but honestly, figuring out who handles what is half the battle here.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Common authorities that you’ll have to deal with while living in Germany are:</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-ausl-nderbeh-rder" class="">Ausländerbehörder</li>

<li id="htoc-burgerburo" class="">BurgerBuro</li>

<li id="htoc-steueramt" class="">Steueramt</li>

<li id="htoc-rentenversicherung" class="">Rentenversicherung&nbsp;</li>

<li id="htoc-krankenkasse" class="">Krankenkasse&nbsp;<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By first understanding <em>who</em> is responsible for this process, you’ll be better able to find all the additional information you’re going to need.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s your map to navigate German bureaucracy:</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="410" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-common-authorities-for-foreigners-410x1024.webp" alt="Cheat sheet - navigating German bureaucracy " class="wp-image-996" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-common-authorities-for-foreigners-410x1024.webp 410w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-common-authorities-for-foreigners-120x300.webp 120w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-common-authorities-for-foreigners.webp 480w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px" /></figure>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now that you’re <em>pretty</em> sure who’s responsible for this application, you’re ready to take-on the mission instructions.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-step-2-know-what-you-have-to-do">STEP 2: KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It might seem obvious, but you need to understand what you <em>need to do</em> for this application.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ve seen for myself how a lack of understanding about what I should bring or how to present my information for the bureaucrats can lead to annoying delays.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, when I had to resubmit my <a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/qualification-recognition/">application for professional registration</a> because I’d misunderstood <em>Beglaubigte Kopie</em> to mean simply the translations. Lesson learnt! Read everything <em>carefully</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To ensure your applications are a success first time, every time, <em>know</em> what is required from you. &nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:29px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-what-are-the-steps-of-this-process">What are the steps of this process?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, start at the start.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What steps do you need to take for this application or process? </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My guess is that there’ll be <em>many </em>steps and a few side-quests to test your endurance.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, if you’re applying for a residency visa, the steps you’ll need to complete are:&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-make-an-appointment-at-the-ausl-nderbeh-rder" class="">Make an appointment at the Ausländerbehörder. <br></li>

<li id="htoc-collect-paperwork-according-to-the-list-from-the-ausl-nderbeh-rder" class="">Collect paperwork according to the list from the Ausländerbehörder. <br></li>

<li id="htoc-have-translations-apostilles-and-certified-copies-made-as-required-ahh-the-side-quests" class="">Have translations, Apostilles, and certified copies made as required (ahh the side quests!). <br></li>

<li id="htoc-attend-the-appointment-at-the-ausl-nderbeh-rder" class="">Attend the appointment at the Ausländerbehörder. <br></li>

<li id="htoc-collect-your-auswei-from-the-ausl-nderbeh-rder-on-the-specified-date" class="">Collect your Ausweiß from the Ausländerbehörder on the specified date. <br></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, what steps are necessary for <em>your</em> process?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To find out, <em>read everything</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ll probably get a letter full of steps (and legal jargon) from the authority, but don’t panic—it’s manageable, I promise. Put your passport back &#8211; it’s not that bad. Breathe through that overwhelm.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-where-do-i-look-for-help">Where do I look for help? </h4>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-check-the-website-of-the-relevant-authority-many-but-no-not-all-have-websites-in-languages-other-than-german-which-makes-it-easier-some-even-have-handy-factsheets-and-diagrams-showing-you-how-to-get-on-with-your-paperwork" class=""><strong>Check the website of the relevant authority.</strong> <br>Many (but no, not all) have websites in languages other than German which makes it easier. Some even have handy factsheets and diagrams, showing you how to get on with your paperwork.<br><br></li>

In my experience, many of the operators <em>can</em> speak English (if you first ask them <em>sehr nett</em>). Your success with emails will depend wholly on the authority that you’re dealing with.<br><br></li>

<li id="htoc-check-in-with-other-foreigners-in-your-city-you-might-have-friends-in-the-community-who-are-also-foreigners-and-may-be-able-to-point-you-in-the-right-direction-if-not-why-not-make-a-public-cry-for-help-in-one-of-the-ex-pat-facebook-groups-in-your-city" class=""><strong>Check-in with other foreigners in your city. </strong><br>You might have friends in the community who are also foreigners and may be able to point you in the right direction. If not, why not make a public cry for help in one of the ex-pat Facebook groups in your city?<br><br></li>
</ul>

<div class="convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form" style=""><script async data-uid="52e365d1bf" src="https://breatheinbetween.kit.com/52e365d1bf/index.js" data-jetpack-boost="ignore" data-no-defer="1" data-no-optimize="1" nowprocket></script></div>

<div style="height:60px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While online groups <em>can</em> be full an effective way to quickly get an answer, I’ve had mixed results using them. I’ve found the responses to fall into one of three categories:</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-folk-who-have-the-same-question-and-are-riding-your-coattails" class="">Folk who have the <em>same</em> question and are riding your coattails.&nbsp;<br><br></li>

<li id="htoc-jaded-expats-whose-first-answer-is-always-learn-german-but-typically-followed-up-by-some-helpful-information" class="">Jaded expats whose first answer is <em>always</em> “learn German!” but typically followed up by some helpful information.<br><br></li>

<li id="htoc-people-sharing-their-own-experience-but-offer-no-clear-guidance-for-your-problem" class="">People sharing <em>their</em> own experience but offer no clear guidance for <em>your</em> problem.</li>
</ol>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These processes are <em>so</em> personal to your circumstances that an indivdualised response is best. When possible, ask the authority directly.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don’t let yourself become overwhelmed by language or confusion or the uncomfortable feeling that maybe I’m going to look a little bit silly if I ask this silly little question.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Channel your inner-German and be direct. Ask the question. With the direct answer you’ll definitely receive, you’ll be able to get on with the next steps of the process and be sure of the success of your application.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="681" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed-1024x681.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-1011" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed-1024x681.webp 1024w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed-300x200.webp 300w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed-768x511.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed-1080x718.webp 1080w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed-980x652.webp 980w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed-480x319.webp 480w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-bureaucracy-how-to-succeed.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-what-documents-do-you-need-exactly">What documents do you need <em>exactly?&nbsp;</em></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one’s easy. It’s pretty typical of German bureaucracy to give you a handy but oh-so-long list of the required documents.&nbsp;<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s a list of the fairly standard documents you will need to provide for most applications:</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-birth-certificate" class="">Birth certificate</li>

<li id="htoc-passport" class="">Passport</li>

<li id="htoc-marriage-certificate" class="">Marriage certificate</li>

<li id="htoc-anmeldung-confirmation-of-your-registered-address" class="">Anmeldung (confirmation of your registered address)&nbsp;</li>

<li id="htoc-qualifications" class="">Qualifications</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>REMEMBER: </strong>German authorities like to see everything <em>im original</em>. The bureaucrats will then make a copy of the necessary documents during your appointment.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re submitting documents by post, be sure to confirm:</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-if-you-need-to-send-original-documents" class="">If you need to send original documents&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>OR</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-if-you-need-to-send-certified-copies" class="">If you need to send certified copies.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Getting your documents certified can take some time, so be sure to factor this into your planning.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And don’t forget, if your documents are not in German, you’ll almost definitely need to have them translated before they’ll be accepted by German authorities. Translations can can take up to two weeks for to be completed. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The timeframe depends on the original language and the nature of documents, so don’t leave this preparation until the last minute!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are of course exceptions to these rules, thus I say, <em>read everything</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With the mission’s directions fully understood, it’s time to find shortcuts to avoid overwhelm.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-step-3-find-foreigner-friendly-shortcuts">Step 3: Find foreigner-friendly shortcuts&nbsp;</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-can-i-do-this-online">Can I do this online?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your first question needs to be “Can any of this be done online?”.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Generally, no. No it can’t. German authorities are BIG on <em>persönliche gespräche</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many “online” options still result in receiving letters in the post or having to post out a digital form.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>BUT.</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is dependent on the authority you’re working with and the city you’re living in.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, in Dresden, I can book appointments with the Burger Buro online but can’t submit anything online.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the other hand, when submitting documents to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung, I simply emailed everything to my case officer (without translations <em>or</em> certified copies!).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But my application for professional registration? Everything had to be submitted in paper. Mountains of paper. Certified copies <em>and</em> translations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So, investigate the options you have. Check any documents you receive from the authority to see if there are any “online” options.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a foreigner who may not yet be fluent in German, it’s easier to manage as much as possible remotely.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Downloading printable documents to be completed at home might be the only option available. Online portals to complete full applications are not common among German authorities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Blame Datenschutz!&nbsp;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The irony that my online identity is protected online by posting certified and translated copies of every important identity document in the mail is lost on many Germans.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-k-nnten-wir-auf-englisch-reden"><em>Könnten wir auf Englisch reden?</em></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my first years here, I began almost <em>every</em> conversation like this. You never know! Sometimes people even said “Yes” (after painfully explaining in perfect English how poor their English is).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes German bureaucracy <em>can</em> work with you in your native language.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Note here that I say <em>can</em>. Many authorities are not <em>allowed</em> to manage applications in a foreign language. Frustrating? Absolutely. But we can always try.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For example, the <a href="https://www.tk.de/en">Health Insurance company TK</a> has an English help-line and English-language App. The services available in English is limited but it is still super helpful for when you need to discuss complex topics, such as health care.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When the answer is 100% no (don’t be surprised if this is the case), then bring someone with you <em>who can </em>speak German fluently.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You <em>need</em> to understand what is being discussed and what the next steps for you are.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This person can be a partner, friend, acquaintance or professional interpreter. As long as it’s someone <em>you trust</em> who is fluent in both German and your native language, it’s ok.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To my knowledge, there’s no restriction to <em>who</em> can accompany you to an appointment.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>TIP: </strong>See if your city has any support services available in your language or request support from your local ex-pat Facebook group.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alright. Mission control has set the timer. Let’s get organised, lest we ever be late!</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1-1024x683.webp" alt="" class="wp-image-1014" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1-1024x683.webp 1024w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1-300x200.webp 300w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1-768x512.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1-1080x720.webp 1080w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1-980x653.webp 980w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1-480x320.webp 480w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/pocket-1565402_1280-1.webp 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<div style="height:31px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-step-4-german-punctuality-is-no-joke">Step 4: German punctuality is no joke&nbsp;</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No matter what the application, give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some of these processes and applications can take a <em>lot</em> of preparation. In my experience, it isn’t the <em>application form </em>that’s the hard part.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On first look, they might seem straightforward.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>“Great! Only 1 page to fill in!” </em>I thought when I first began the application process to be professionally registered here. Except, that 1 page was the easy part. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Collecting documents, having translations completed and getting certified copies was the time-consuming part.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Be sure that you <em>read everything</em> and fully understand what additional information you’re required to provide.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Give yourself time to read everything, collect the required documents and attend your appointment or submit it all by mail.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the moment I’m going through the process of applying for German citizenship. It is a hefty pile of paper that I need to get through, so I’m tacking one side a day. It takes me about 15 minutes.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>EASY!</strong> I can do 15 minutes a day of this paperwork.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But trying to get through all of the forms and finding the supporting documents in one go? That would <em>not</em> be possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>If you need additional time, just ask. Most authorities are very accommodating as long as you communicate directly with them.</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The worst thing you can do is come to an appointment unprepared or just skip it altogether. Don’t do that.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Be more German. Be bold. Just ask.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And now, it’s time to meet the big boss. You’ve successfully followed your mission instructions and have conquered several annoying but equally important side quests. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s submission time.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="648" height="838" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-display-folder-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1015" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-display-folder-1.jpg 648w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-display-folder-1-232x300.jpg 232w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-display-folder-1-400x516.jpg 400w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/German-Bureaucracy-display-folder-1-480x621.jpg 480w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-step-5-make-your-application-bullet-i-mean-mter-proof">Step 5: Make your application bullet &#8211; I mean, Ämter proof.</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ok, this one isn’t a written rule about how the bureaucracy runs but trust me, it’ll help you see some version of that famed but sorely missing German efficiency.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ve gotten into the habit of rolling up to appointments with my handy display folder complete with colour coded labels. Trust me, the bureaucrats <em>love it</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you can whip out the right documents when needed, the speed of bureaucrat&#8217;s photocopying will increase, which means you can get out of that eerily quiet office faster (but seriously &#8211; for bustling public offices, why are they <em>always </em>SO quiet?).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you need to submit your application <em>per Post</em>, send the documents <em>in</em> the display folder. Make a neat little table of contents for the front of the folder and tab the documents down the side. Your application <em>will </em>be processed faster if your application is easy to read. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is <em>definitely</em> a little tedious but remember &#8211; bureaucrats are just people.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Slow, paper-loving and rule-abiding people with mountains of applications to manually process. If you were in their shoes, would you reach for the unruly pile of papers, or the neatly presented and easy-to-navigate folder of documents?&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-good-luck">Good Luck!</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now don’t get me wrong, you can do <em>all</em> of these things and the bureaucracy <em>still</em> take too long.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That’s just bureaucracy. Unfortunately, some applications need inter-departmental cooperation and that, in any country, is a recipe for lengthy delays.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But by taking my advice and implementing these tips into your completion of paperwork, you’ll give yourself the best chance at getting a positive outcome in your application <em>and</em> getting it as fast as possible.&nbsp;</p>
