<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Unfortunately, this is often the part of the relocation that dictates how the first weeks and months after the move go for the entire family.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s natural to want your children to feel excited. Adventurous. Positive.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But emotional preparation isn’t about building hype. It’s about building safety, realistic expectations and setting some very real boundaries.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This post aims to give you a functional framework to prepare first yourself and then your child for the international move.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-1-start-with-honest-age-appropriate-conversations"><strong>1. Start With Honest, Age-Appropriate Conversations</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children don’t need every administrative detail, but they do need clarity about what to expect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tell them:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-where-you-re-going" class="">Where you’re going<br></li>

<li id="htoc-when-it-s-happening" class="">When it’s happening<br></li>

<li id="htoc-what-will-change" class="">What will change<br></li>

<li id="htoc-what-they-don-t-yet-know" class="">What they don’t yet know<br></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-683x1024.webp" alt="A Mother and daughter snuggled on the couch, talking about their planned international relocation." class="wp-image-1936" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-683x1024.webp 683w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-200x300.webp 200w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations-768x1151.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-Age-Appropriate-Conversations.webp 854w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Avoid overselling the move as “the best adventure ever”. When we overemphasise the positives, children can feel confused or guilty if they don’t feel excited.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We also need to be honest with them about the negatives we can expect. Remember, homesickness, language barriers, cultural confusion and the adjustment to a new home are all foreseeable outcomes of an international move.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, try:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“This is a big change. Some parts might feel exciting. Some parts might feel hard. We’ll figure it out together.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That statement recognises the good and the bad, while also building trust that you’ll be there for <em>all of it.</em></p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-2-name-what-will-stay-the-same"><strong>2. Name What Will Stay the Same</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the face of change, children look for anchors.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>What will stay the same</em>?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same-768x1024.webp" alt="A child playing with her favourite toy. Something that will stay the same after her international relocation." class="wp-image-1937" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same-768x1024.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same-225x300.webp 225w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-What-will-stay-the-same.webp 960w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We can help our children prepare for this massive change by giving them a strong foundation to stand on.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let them know what will be the same in their new home.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Siblings will come, their favourite toys will be with them, and they will still be able to have their favourite food or play their favourite sport.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s important to assure your child that <em>they</em> will still be them and that <em>you</em> will still be you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“You’ll still be you. You’ll still love [favourite sport]. I’ll still nag at you to brush your teeth. Our family won’t change.”&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The more sameness you can highlight for your child, the less scary the planned changes might sound.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think of the “sameness” as their foundation. Each one thickens the floor beneath them, ready to withstand the upcoming changes in their new home.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-3-expect-emotional-reactions-to-show-up-later"><strong>3. Expect Emotional Reactions to Show Up Later</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s a common story: during the move, the children thrive,d but then, suddenly, after 6 or 8 weeks, something changed.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>This</strong> is often one of the most misunderstood parts of moving abroad with kids.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many children cope well during the planning, packing and arrival. There’s adrenaline from the adventure.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your new home is novel and there are hundreds of distractions to keep them busy.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But later, as you settle into your new normal, your child’s emotions come to the surface. It can look different for every child, but you might notice:&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-regression" class="">Regression.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-clinginess" class="">Clinginess.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-tantrums" class="">Tantrums.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-withdrawal" class="">Withdrawal.<br></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="731" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-731x1024.webp" alt="A young boy with his face in his hands as he processes the big move abroad." class="wp-image-1938" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-731x1024.webp 731w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-214x300.webp 214w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later-768x1076.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-emotions-will-show-up-later.webp 914w" sizes="(max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a sign that your child’s feelings have “caught up”. The novelty has worn off and the distractions are gone.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Now</em> is the time that homesickness may show its face, along with other emotional challenges.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/my-first-month-in-germany/">I wish I’d known this during my first month in Germany.</a></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If this happens, it doesn’t mean the move was a mistake. It means their system is catching up and they need you <em>now</em>.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-4-involve-them-but-gently"><strong>4. Involve Them But Gently</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children need agency in their lives, <em>even</em> in major transitions that seem to be “grown-up decisions”.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The important part here is <em>what</em> they have agency over.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let them:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-choose-a-few-items-to-pack-in-their-arrival-bag" class="">Choose a few items to pack in their “arrival bag”<br></li>

<li id="htoc-help-plan-how-their-new-room-might-look" class="">Help plan how their new room might look<br></li>

<li id="htoc-research-playgrounds-or-activities-in-their-new-home" class="">Research playgrounds or activities in their new home.<br></li>
</ul>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="682" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-682x1024.webp" alt="A child with her own backpack for her international move." class="wp-image-1939" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-682x1024.webp 682w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-200x300.webp 200w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack-768x1152.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/How-to-Prepare-Your-Children-Emotionally-for-an-International-Move-child-with-backpack.webp 853w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But avoid placing <em>emotional</em> responsibility on them.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your child should never feel responsible for making the move “work”.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Their job is to remain children, following your lead as their parent.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your job is to pave the way and build a strong foundation for your family to stand on in your new home.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-5-create-emotional-anchors-before-you-leave"><strong>5. Create Emotional Anchors Before You Leave</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Goodbyes matter. <em>For everyone</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whenever possible:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-visit-favourite-places-intentionally" class="">Visit favourite places intentionally.<br></li>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Transitional objects help, too. Consider prioritising the packing of:&nbsp;</p>

<li id="htoc-familiar-blanket-or-cuddle-toy" class="">Familiar blanket or cuddle toy.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-a-favourite-mug" class="">A favourite mug.<br></li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children don’t need everything in their new home. They need a few things that say: <em>home still exists inside this change.&nbsp;</em></p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-6-regulate-yourself-first"><strong>6. Regulate Yourself First</strong></h2>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one is often the hardest.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children look to their primary caregiver to manage their big feelings. They listen to the tone of your voice, your posture, and your breathing.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Without realising it, they’re calm when you’re calm and losing it when they sense <em>you’re</em> not coping.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fair? Not really, especially when you have so much already on the go.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t need to be perfectly calm all of the time, but if you are chronically overwhelmed and stressed, they <em>will</em> feel it.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And you will, too.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Preparing your children emotionally for relocation starts with protecting your own capacity. Capacity to manage stress, roll with the punches and to be needed.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Because you will be needed.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That might mean:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-reducing-commitments-before-the-move" class="">Reducing commitments before the move.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-seeking-support-early-at-home-and-in-your-new-home-because-building-an-expat-support-network-matters" class="">Seeking support early, at home and in your new home, because <a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/expat-support-network/">building an expat support network matters</a>.<br></li>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-7-what-emotional-preparation-is-not"><strong>7. What Emotional Preparation Is NOT</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Preparing yourself and your children for this emotional transition is <em>not:</em></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-ignoring-sadness-grief-or-mixed-feelings" class="">Ignoring sadness, grief or mixed feelings.&nbsp;<br></li>

<li id="htoc-convincing-your-child-that-life-in-your-new-home-will-be-better" class="">Convincing your child that life in your new home will be “better”.&nbsp;<br></li>

<li id="htoc-preventing-every-challenge-or-difficulty-your-child-may-experience-through-this-transition" class="">Preventing every challenge or difficulty your child may experience through this transition.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An international move <em>is</em> disruptive and many challenges that it brings can be planned for.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Emotional Preparation means that this transition doesn’t need to feel frightening, isolating or too big to handle.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-you-can-t-remove-all-stress-but-you-can-soften-it"><strong>You Can’t Remove All Stress, But You Can Soften It</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Relocating internationally with your kids will stretch you all in ways you couldn’t have imagined.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Life in your new home probably won’t be perfect, but it likely won’t be the worst decision you’ve ever made, either.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your child will move through this transition and adapt more easily when they feel:&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-informed" class="">informed<br></li>

<li id="htoc-included" class="">included<br></li>

<li id="htoc-emotionally-validated" class="">emotionally validated<br></li>

<li id="htoc-and-anchored-to-you" class="">and anchored to you<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And if you’re reading this, wondering whether you’re doing enough, the fact that you’re thinking about their emotional well-being already says a great deal about the kind of parent you are.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t have to get this perfect.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Good enough <strong><em>is</em></strong> good enough.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-the-gap-no-one-warns-you-about-when-moving-abroad-with-kids">The gap no one warns you about when moving abroad with kids</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’ve noticed a pattern, <a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/expat-motherhood-journey-in-germany/" type="post" id="1384">from both my own experience</a> and in the families I speak with. As a relocation coach and a mother who’s lived this transition, I see the same rhythm again and again.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The move itself often goes <em>well enough</em>.<br>Bureaucracy gets done, somehow.<br>Accommodation is always found and the family moves in with no issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Slowly, the children begin school and Kindergarten, just like at home.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Except, it’s <em>not</em> just like at home. After the first 4 &#8211; 6 weeks, something seems to shift.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children who seemed “fine” begin to struggle.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Parents feel more tired, more reactive and sometimes even less sure of themselves, wondering if they’ve made a mistake by moving their family abroad.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Suddenly, small daily tasks and challenges feel heavy, difficult and exhausting.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is the part many families underestimate. <strong>Not</strong> because they’re naïve, but because it’s rarely talked about honestly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong><em>emotional</em></strong> impact of relocating a family overseas.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="684" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Emotional-Impact-684x1024.webp" alt="Mother hugging her son after moving abroad together and the emotional impact becoming clear." class="wp-image-1915" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Emotional-Impact-684x1024.webp 684w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Emotional-Impact-200x300.webp 200w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Emotional-Impact-768x1150.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Emotional-Impact.webp 855w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-1-why-the-emotional-impact-of-moving-overseas-with-children-shows-up-later">1. Why the emotional impact of moving overseas with children shows up later</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the biggest surprises for parents is <em>timing</em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Children don’t always react immediately to an international move. There’s too much excitement.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many children hold it together through the practical chaos of packing, travelling and arrival. It’s often only once life begins to settle into a familiar routine that emotions surface.</p>

<div style="height:41px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center has-ast-global-color-0-color has-ast-global-color-3-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-7b8a07505b03e9b9c2f63a1b0511eb57 wp-block-paragraph"><strong><em>This delayed response is completely normal.</em></strong></p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For children, emotional processing often happens when they finally feel safe enough to let it out. What can look like “regression,” defiance, or moodiness is often their nervous system catching up.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Often, this is also the moment parents start to finally slow down and realise how much <em>they’ve</em> been holding together.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, many younger children simply can’t <em>comprehend</em> what it means to move abroad until the familiar routine settles in and they’re <em>not</em> in their usual location.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For parents, this can feel confusing and worrying:</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph"><strong>&nbsp;<em>“They were coping so well — what happened?”</em></strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nothing went wrong. Your children are simply responding to the changes they’re experiencing.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="682" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Mother-carrying-too-much-682x1024.webp" alt="Mother holding her head, feeling stressed after underestimating how much she carried through the family relocation abroad. " class="wp-image-1918" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Mother-carrying-too-much-682x1024.webp 682w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Mother-carrying-too-much-200x300.webp 200w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Mother-carrying-too-much-768x1152.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Mother-carrying-too-much.webp 853w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></figure>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-2-mothers-underestimate-how-much-they-re-carrying">2. Mothers underestimate how much they’re carrying</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another common underestimation is the weight mothers hold during relocation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even in families with strong partnerships, mothers are often:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-tracking-children-s-emotional-states" class="">tracking children’s emotional states<br></li>

<li id="htoc-managing-routines" class="">managing routines<br></li>

<li id="htoc-interpreting-new-systems" class="">interpreting new systems<br></li>

<li id="htoc-holding-the-family-s-sense-of-safety" class="">holding the family’s sense of safety<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All while navigating their own loss of familiarity and identity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many capable, organised women are surprised by how unsteady they feel abroad. Tasks that once felt easy require more energy. Confidence feels conditional. Decision fatigue sets in quickly.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It can be as small as standing in a supermarket aisle, staring at unfamiliar products, suddenly feeling close to tears.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-text-align-center has-ast-global-color-0-color has-ast-global-color-3-background-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-738ab21c8bb9313f7c1052791fe56133 wp-block-paragraph"><strong>You’re not failing. </strong><br><br><strong>Maintaining an elevated level of responsibility through a long-term transition is hard.&nbsp;</strong></p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Understanding this can be deeply relieving.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-3-the-loss-of-invisible-supports">3. The loss of invisible supports</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When families move abroad, they don’t just leave people and places.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They lose an <em>ease</em> to their life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ease of knowing how things work. The ease of knowing which forms matter. Which doctor to call. How long things usually take.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Suddenly, everyday tasks require attention and interpretation. Over time, this constant vigilance takes a toll.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/overcoming-expat-overwhelm/" type="post" id="1276">This is why many parents feel exhausted even when “nothing is technically wrong.”</a> The mental load has changed.</p>

<div style="height:60px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div class="convertkit-form wp-block-convertkit-form" style=""><script async data-uid="52e365d1bf" src="https://breatheinbetween.kit.com/52e365d1bf/index.js" data-jetpack-boost="ignore" data-no-defer="1" data-no-optimize="1" nowprocket></script></div>

<div style="height:80px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-4-children-need-familiarity-more-than-excitement">4. Children need familiarity more than excitement</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s tempting to focus on the positives of an international move: new adventures, the opportunities to learn and of course, the growth of each personality.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And those things do matter.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But in the early stages of this transition, children actually need familiarity.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our kids crave familiar objects, routines and ways of being soothed and loved.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When these are taken away through the impacts of international relocation, children may cling, withdraw, or push back. These behaviours are often misread as resistance or ingratitude, when they’re actually your child’s way of seeking reassurance. <em>From you.</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Anchors matter more than novelty at first.</p>

<div style="height:70px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Moving-Abroad-with-Kids_-The-Most-Underestimated-Outcomes-Children-need-familiarity-683x1024.webp" alt="Child cuddling his teddy bear, acting out his need for familiarity after moving internationally with his family. <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-5-why-settling-after-an-international-move-with-kids-takes-longer-than-expected">5. Why settling after an international move with kids takes longer than expected</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s a quiet pressure around relocation timelines.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>“We should be settled by now.”</em><em><br></em><em><br></em> <em>“Other families seem fine.”</em><em><br></em><em><br></em> <em>“Why does this still feel hard?”</em></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The truth is that, like most transitions in life, adjustment is rarely linear. There are periods of calm, followed by unexpected dips. Progress often happens in small, uneven steps.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These family relocation challenges are common. Even in well-planned international moves with kids.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Avoid comparing your family’s timeline to someone else’s and take each day as it comes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’re not behind.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your family’s transition is theirs alone.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:80px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-what-helps-families-navigate-this-more-steadily"><strong>What helps families navigate this more steadily</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There’s a few things that I’ve noticed that consistently help families through these life-changing transitions. None of these require you to do more. They’re about doing <em>less</em> but with more intentionality.&nbsp;</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-naming-what-s-normal" class="">Naming what’s normal.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-reducing-pressure-to-make-it-work-quickly-instead-relax-into-the-change" class="">Reducing pressure to “make it work” quickly. Instead, relax into the change.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-prioritising-emotional-safety-alongside-logistics" class="">Prioritising emotional safety alongside logistics.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-creating-small-predictable-anchors" class="">Creating small, predictable anchors.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-supporting-your-children-s-nervous-systems-to-stay-calm-avoid-focusing-only-onbehaviour" class="">Supporting your children’s nervous systems to stay calm. Avoid focusing only onbehaviour.<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Each of these points brings a gentler approach to supporting your children.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Often, during these transitions, all our children need is <em>us</em>. Don’t forget to be patient with yourself, too.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:80px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-you-don-t-have-to-figure-this-out-alone"><strong>You don’t have to figure this out alone</strong></h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An international move with kids reshapes daily life in ways most families don’t anticipate, even when the move was wanted and perfectly planned.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re preparing for an international move, or already navigating life abroad, my <strong>Expat Starter Kit</strong> is designed to support the early months of transition with practical tools and grounded guidance.</p>

<div style="height:20px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-have-i-made-the-right-decision">Have I made the right decision?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s a question that still pops into my mind, even after four years of living abroad in Germany.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We don’t have crystal balls to show us both versions of our future. All we have are our values, our hopes, and the information available to us right now to make a decision that reflects the life we want.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you’re asking yourself, <em>&#8220;Should I move to Germany with my family?&#8221;</em>, I’m here to help you make the best decision you can. This post offers you a structured process to support your decision-making process to ensure that your move matches your family’s needs and values.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So grab a drink, a pen, and maybe even your partner. Let’s dive in.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-why-families-consider-moving-to-germany">Why Families Consider Moving to Germany</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Germany is often seen as an ideal location for families considering a big move abroad, and it’s easy to see why.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A few reasons are:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-world-class-public-healthcare-and-education" class="">World-class public healthcare and education.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-subsidised-childcare-and-generous-parental-leave-allowances" class="">Subsidised childcare and generous parental leave allowances.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-family-friendly-cities-complete-with-playgrounds-and-green-spaces" class="">Family-friendly cities, complete with playgrounds and green spaces.<br></li>

<li id="htoc-work-life-balance-is-at-the-core-of-german-culture-while-they-work-hard-they-rest-even-harder" class="">Work-life balance is at the core of German culture. While they work hard, they rest even harder.</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many families are drawn to Germany for professional opportunities, while others hope to connect with their own family and heritage. Whatever your reasons for considering a move to Germany, it’s a country well worth exploring for your family.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1080" height="720" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Should-I-move-to-to-Germany-with-my-family_-Why-Families-consider-moving-to-Germany.webp" alt="Children playing in greenspace, one reason why a family may consider moving to Germany. <div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-who-what-where-when-how-long-and-why">Who, What, Where, When, How Long, and Why?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We’ll use these simple but powerful everyday questions to break down your decision-making process and guide your thinking.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Considering this life-changing decision step-by-step will keep that rising overwhelm at bay and allow you to think <em>critically</em>, not just emotionally about whether Germany is a good fit for your family.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-who-will-benefit-from-moving-abroad"><em>Who</em> Will Benefit from Moving Abroad?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">List every family member on your sheet of paper. Then ask: <em>who</em> benefits, and how?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe relocating to Germany is mainly for your career, or perhaps your partner is returning to their home. Maybe your children will gain language skills or build connections with members of the extended family.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s ok if the perceived benefits of the move aren’t evenly distributed. What matters right now is simply <em>knowing</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our natural instinct is to <em>rank</em> these benefits. Who will get the most out of the move? Who will lose from our move abroad? Is that fair?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stop.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Avoid judging or ranking whose benefit matters most.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In my own experience, I felt resentment early on—my family seemed to thrive while I struggled to find my footing. But over time, I realised we all benefited in different ways, at different times.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-what-will-be-achieved"><em>What</em> Will Be Achieved?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s time to get crystal clear on your goals. What do you want to do in Germany, that can’t be done at home?</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Here are a few prompts to help you with this step:&nbsp;</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-do-you-want-to-deepen-family-connections-with-extended-family-in-germany-your-children-your-spouse" class="">Do you want to deepen family connections with extended family in Germany/ your children/ your spouse?<br></li>

<li id="htoc-are-their-career-or-study-options-only-available-to-you-in-germany" class="">Are their career or study options, only available to you in Germany?<br></li>

<li id="htoc-are-you-looking-for-a-new-adventure" class="">Are you looking for a new adventure?<br></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When things get hard in your new home (and they <em>will</em>), these goals will become your anchor.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For my family, our “whats” were:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-experiencing-life-in-germany-my-husband-s-home" class="">Experiencing life in Germany, my husband’s home ✅<br></li>

<li id="htoc-learning-german-the-children-and-me" class="">Learning German (the children and me) ✅<br></li>

<li id="htoc-nurturing-relationships-with-members-of-our-extended-german-family" class="">Nurturing relationships with members of our extended German family ✅</li>
</ul>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Four years in and we’ve checked every box.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This step will also help you see if you’re <em>running away</em> from your current life. Moving to Germany <strong>will not</strong> help anything that you want to run away from. A move to Germany with your family <strong><em>will not</em></strong> solve these problems.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-where-will-you-move"><em>Where</em> Will You Move?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sure, you probably already have a city in mind. Even so, zoom in on the details and consider:<br></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-which-neighbourhoods-are-family-friendly" class="">Which neighbourhoods are family-friendly?<br></li>

<li id="htoc-are-there-schools-and-kindergartens-nearby-are-they-bilingual-or-international-schools" class="">Are there schools and kindergartens nearby? Are they bilingual or international schools?<br></li>

</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>If you don’t know yet, that’s no problem. Start research now &#8211; join Facebook groups, look for local expat blogs, and read what other families have experienced.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The more specific you are <em>now</em>, the easier it will be for you <em>later</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="683" src="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/How-to-decide-if-moving-abroad-is-right-for-you-world-map-1-1.webp" alt="A camera, map and passport - useful tools in deciding the answer to the questions &quot;should I move to Germany with my family?&quot;" class="wp-image-957" srcset="https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/How-to-decide-if-moving-abroad-is-right-for-you-world-map-1-1.webp 800w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/How-to-decide-if-moving-abroad-is-right-for-you-world-map-1-1-300x256.webp 300w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/How-to-decide-if-moving-abroad-is-right-for-you-world-map-1-1-768x656.webp 768w, https://breatheinbetween.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/How-to-decide-if-moving-abroad-is-right-for-you-world-map-1-1-480x410.webp 480w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /></figure>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-when-will-you-move"><em>When</em> Will You Move?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Is your deadline fixed or is the timeline more flexible?&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Think about:</strong></p>

</ul>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having a clear timeline helps you feel grounded, even if things change. And they <em>will</em> change.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We were packed and ready to move to Germany as a family in March 20202 . . . and then the Pandemic shut the world’s borders.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-center" id="htoc-flexibility-matters-and-it-s-easier-to-be-flexible-when-we-have-a-plan-in-the-first-place">Flexibility matters and it’s easier to be flexible when we have a plan in the first place.&nbsp;</h4>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-how-long-will-you-live-abroad"><em>How Long</em> Will You Live Abroad?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Is this a one-year adventure, or a long-term relocation?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While considering if you should move to Germany with your family, get clear on your initial plan and as a family, agree to revisit it at regular intervals.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You don’t have to have <em>all</em> the answers right now, but a shared understanding goes a long way to avoid conflict, disappointment and resentment later.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our original plan was to live in Germany as a family for 3 &#8211; 5 years. We’re four years in and are still figuring out what comes next.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-why-are-you-moving"><em>Why</em> Are You Moving?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We have arrived at the heart of your decision.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your “why” might be different from your partner’s, and that’s ok. What matters is articulating your individual and shared purposes. Understanding each other’s why will deepen your understanding of each other and better support your relationship after the big move.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ask yourself:</strong> Why does this move make sense for me? For us? For our kids?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Try to go deeper than simply “for work” or “for a change”. Here are some prompts to help you dig deeper:<br></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-why-is-this-opportunity-in-germany-worth-the-international-move-with-my-family" class=""><em>Why is this opportunity in Germany worth the international move with my family? </em><em><br></em></li>

<li id="htoc-why-is-this-drastic-change-required-or-desired" class=""><em>Why is this drastic change required or desired? </em><em><br></em></li>

<li id="htoc-why-am-i-drawn-to-germany" class=""><em>Why am I drawn to Germany?&nbsp;</em></li>
</ul>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em><br></em>Your “why” will be tightly linked to your personal values: what you want for your life, your relationship and your children.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Because when challenges arise (and they will), you’ll need a strong “why” to keep pushing you forward to build the life of your dreams in Germany.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-germany-a-family-friendly-choice">Germany: A Family-Friendly Choice</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Germany doesn’t just accommodate families, <a href="https://www.iamexpat.de/expat-info/family-kids">it actively supports them</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-here-are-just-a-few-examples-of-how"><br>Here are just a few examples of how:</h3>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li id="htoc-childcare-is-typically-very-affordable-and-widely-available-to-families" class="">Childcare is typically very affordable and widely available to families.<br></li>

</ul>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I’m not trying to paint an idealised picture of Germany. It isn’t the perfect place and life here can still be hard. But in my experience, the support provided for families can make a very real difference to the functioning of our family.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-common-objections-and-why-they-re-valid-but-solvable">Common Objections (and Why They’re Valid—But Solvable)</h2>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-what-if-my-kids-don-t-adjust">What if my kids don’t adjust?</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Kids are incredibly resilient. With the right support and time, most kids will thrive in their new life.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Talk with them, validate their feelings and always involve them in your planning.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-i-m-worried-about-learning-the-language">I’m worried about learning the language.</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is probably one of the main objections I hear! And I get it. Learning a language is hard, especially as an adult (I know, I’ve done it!).&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But remember: You don’t need to be fluent overnight. Start with key phrases, and consider online lessons. Many families arrive speaking little German and learn it gradually over time.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">How necessary it is for you to speak German will depend on where you live and your field of work. This alone shouldn’t stop you from making the move if Germany really is your dream location.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-i-m-afraid-i-ll-lose-my-support-network">I’m afraid I’ll lose my support network.</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Packing up and leaving our lives behind, including our beloved friends and family, is hard. In time,&nbsp; you will build new connections with people who understand your new life. They’ll be by your side through the ups and downs of your new expat life.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You won’t lose your old friendships but they will look different. Thank goodness we live in the digital age. Keeping in contact with your long-distance bestie has never been easier.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Learn how to build your </em><a href="https://breatheinbetween.com/expat-support-network/"><em>expat support network</em></a><em>, even before you leave home.&nbsp;</em></p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here’s a simple framework to reflect on your decision:</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Head</strong> – Does this make logical, practical sense?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Heart</strong> – Does this move feel aligned with your values and dreams?&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Logistics</strong> – Can we realistically make this happen?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="htoc-faq-should-i-move-to-germany-with-my-family">FAQ: Should I Move to Germany with My Family?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Is there an ideal age for kids to move?</strong><strong><br></strong>Many say the younger, the better &#8211; but children of all ages can thrive when given the right support and tools to navigate their transition.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Do I need to know German before I go?</strong><strong><br></strong>No. It helps, but it’s not essential. You can begin learning after you arrive, though having a few basics will ease your transition.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Can we afford it?<br></strong>Germany can be very affordable, especially compared to other cities like London or New York City. Public Healthcare and Education reduce costs significantly. Watch <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DH0xGdDo4n9/">this video from @usa.mom.in.germany for a great explanation</a>.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You’ve reflected, you’ve journaled and maybe you’ve even talked it through with your partner.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But you’re still not 100% sure? That’s ok.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is no right or wrong answer &#8211; only the decision that is right for you and your family.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Get curious, gather some more information, and trust yourself. Your gut is telling you what you need to do.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you decide to stay or relocate your family to Germany, you’re already so brave for even <em>considering</em> this huge step.&nbsp;</p>
