Planning a family trip to Germany this Christmas? Dresden is home to ten magical Christmas markets — including Germany’s oldest!

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to plan a joyful, stress-free visit with kids, complete with opening dates, family tips, and local highlights.

But first, what is a Christmas Market?

Christmas markets are cozy, outdoor spaces offering the perfect place to meet with friends and family. The traditions of the Christmas Market stretch back into the Middle Ages.

Here you can purchase the perfect gift, warm up with a mug of Glühwein (warm, spiced wine) and soak up the Christmas spirit.

While many markets are open during the day, they’re best enjoyed after dark.

The twinkling lights, Christmas trees and the intoxicating smells of Glühwein, mixed with gingerbread and roasting meats, will leave you feeling like you’re in a Christmas movie.

Why should I come to the Dresden Christmas Markets?

Here are just a few reasons why Dresden Christmas markets are well worth a visit:

  • THERE ARE 10 HERE! Each has its own unique history and exciting offers.

  • Dresden has the oldest Christmas Market in Germany – the Striezelmarkt. It will be operating for its 591st year in 2025.

  • Dresden is the home of Stollen, the world-famous Christmas cake, so beloved that it has its very own annual festival (it will be celebrated on December 6, 2025).

  • Christmas traditions sprang up in this region. The wooden nutcrackers? Hand-carved in the Ore Mountains, less than an hour away. Christmas Trees? First recorded as being decorated in the Oberlausitz region, less than an hour away.

Why not visit the homes of these Christmas traditions? Here are my top 3 Christmas Family day trips from Dresden.

1. STRIEZELMARKT

Panorama view across Striezelmarkt, the oldest of Dresden's Christmas markets.

Set in the historic old city of Dresden, the Striezelmarkt is Germany’s oldest and Dresden’s most popular Christmas market.

With enormous Christmas trees, twinkling lights, and the intoxicating smells of Gluhwein, gingerbread and roasting meats, you’ll feel like you’ve fallen into a Christmas wonderland.

The stalls offer everything you need to stuff stockings and fill the space under the Christmas Tree.

Hand-carved Christmas decorations from the Ore Mountains (Ergebirge) are the specialty of this market. You’ll see plenty of candle arches (Schwibbogen), Christmas Pyramid (Pyramide) and tree hangings.

For kids and families, the Striezelmarkt offers daily performances of traditional folk songs, a visit from Father Christmas and a climbable candle archway.

Striezelmarkt is the busiest of Dresden‘s Christmas markets. Expect large crowds, long lines, and to pay a premium price for food and drink.

But I still think it’s worth it!

2. MIDDLE AGES MARKET

A group of revellers walking through an alley at Dresden's Middle Ages Christmas Market.

Visiting this market in the stables of Dresden’s castle is my highlight every year!

For kids, this market is history brought to life! They can see knights, sit on an armoured horse or just watch the Blacksmiths at work.

If you’re looking for a unique Christmas gift, here you’ll find works of hand-carved wood, leather and forged-metal products. For a sneak peek into the traditional methods of creation, be sure not to miss the Blacksmith’s tent.

To avoid paying for entry, schedule your visit to this market on a weekday.

3. CHRISTMAS MARKET AT THE FRAUENKIRCHE

View of the 8-metre Christmas Pyramid in front of the Frauenkirche.

Set beside the historic Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) and marked with an 8-meter-tall Pyramide, this small market is less crowded than the Striezelmarkt but offers just as much heart.

Lose yourself in the twinkling lights, grab yourself a Glühwein and soak in the magic of a German Christmas under the silhouette of this incredible and historic church.

Specialising in locally crafted pottery, glassware and Vogtland lace, you’ll also find plenty of food and drink options. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the reduced prices here compared with the Striezelmarkt.

Be sure to schedule your visit in time for the daily visit from Father Christmas at 4 pm for that extra magical touch.

4. Advent at the Neumarkt

A view into the Christmas Market on the Neumarkt in front of the Frauenkirche.

Showcasing traditional craftsmanship, this market will take you back to a time when life was slower and things were made to last.

Wander by the Nativity Scene, where you have the opportunity to pet real sheep. It’s a highlight for our family every year!

Featuring carollers and live Christmas music, why not sample some of the Christmas market classics here?

Lines are typically shorter and prices are cheaper here than at the Striezelmarkt.

5. ROMANTIC CHRISTMAS MARKET AT THE DRESDEN CASTLE

This tiny market never fails to disappoint. Located directly opposite the Striezelmarkt, it offers respite from the crowds of the larger markets, while also boasting a small carousel for the kids.

6. FINN VILLAGE ON POSTPLATZ

Entry to the Finn Village on Postplatz.

The Finn Village will return to Dresden in 2025 for the third time.

To really enjoy the Finn Village, plan your visit for a Sunday for the weekly family festival, featuring bread making over an open fire, kids quizzes with prizes and much more.

One magical day a year, there’s even a visit from the beloved Finnish character Moomintroll.

7. AUGUSTUSMARKT

View of the giant glitter teddy bear at the Augustmarkt.

Just across the Elbe from Dresden’s Altstadt is the Augustmarkt, celebrating youthfulness and bringing together Christmas traditions from around the world.

Beginning at the Golden Rider, the Augustusmarkt is Dresden’s second largest Christmas Market and offers plenty for kids to explore (the giant light-up Teddy Bear among others!)

8. WINTER LIGHTS ON PRAGER STRAßE

Christmas Markets in Dresden - Winter Lights

Dubbed the Gateway to the City of Christmas, the Winter Lights market transforms Dresden’s main shopping precinct into a Winter Wonderland.

The name says it all – lights. Oh, so many lovely, twinkling lights.

Most exciting is the joy of seeing the 15-meter-tall Christmas Tree light up each evening to a magical Christmas soundtrack.

Children and adults alike will relish the sight (and possibly a ride on) a historic carousel or Ferris wheel at this market.

9. DRESDNER HÜTTENZAUBER

This cute hut resembles what you’d find up on the ski slopes of the Alps, but right here in the heart of the city.

Perfect for families with teens looking for a sit-down meal option instead of the open-air options of the other Christmas markets

Offering traditional Christmas meals of Goose and red cabbage at some times and schnapps-fuelled parties at others, be sure to check the meal times before you go!

10. ELBHANGFEST CHRISTMAS MARKET

Christmas Markets in Dresden - Elbhangfest

My favourite Dresden Christmas market is hidden in the stunning suburb of Loschwitz, offering some of the best views across the Dresden valley.

If you’re after an authentic Christmas market experience while you’re in Dresden, without the crowds and “annoying tourists”, this is the one for you.

Offering food and drink typical of the region, you are also treated to traditional handicrafts and musical entertainment of all genres.

When you’ve soaked up all of the Christmas cheer, why not take a ride on the famous Dresden funicular and take in the breathtaking view over the valley? Or simply take a walk around this breathtakingly old and, in my opinion, the most beautiful corner of the city.
