Just an hour’s drive east of Dresden lies Herrnhut, a small Saxon town with a big claim to fame—it’s the birthplace of the Moravian Star.
The famed 25-point decoration, glowing in windows and churches around the world at Christmas, was first created here in the 19th century as a geometry lesson for local school kids.
Today, Herrnhut offers visitors the chance to step into this tradition at the Herrnhuter Sterne Manufaktur, where you can watch the artisans at work and even craft your own Moravian Star.
A visit here isn’t just about Christmas decorations—it’s an immersive, hands-on cultural experience perfect for families, craft lovers, and anyone looking for a day trip from Dresden that’s not on your usual tourist list of things to do.
Children can enjoy an indoor adventure playground, parents can soak in the history and craftsmanship, and everyone will leave with a unique keepsake and warm holiday memories.

Why Visit Herrnhut from Dresden?
Herrnhut may be small, but it punches well above its weight in history and tradition.
Alongside its famous star-making heritage, it was also the first recorded place where trees were decorated with candles at Christmas time.
For families, it’s a chance to take part in an authentic Saxon craft tradition, while also enjoying child-friendly attractions and seasonal festivities.
In December, this town glows in the dark with the Christmas magic these stars bring.
The town is compact, easy to explore, and surrounded by peaceful countryside. It’s an ideal day trip from Dresden during the Adventszeit or any time of year.

A Brief History of the Moravian Star

The Herrnhuter Stern (Moravian Star) originated in the early 19th century as a teaching aid in a local boarding school.
Over time, it became a beloved Advent decoration, representing the Star of Bethlehem and symbolising light, hope, and faith during the darkest days of the year.
In 1925, Pieter Hendrik Verbeek patented the unique design, paving the way for commercial production.
Today, Herrnhuter Sterne GmbH produces around 70,000 stars each year, shipping them worldwide.
What to Expect at the Herrnhuter Sterne Manufactory & How to Plan Your Visit

The Herrnhuter Stern Manufaktur is the highlight of any trip to Herrnhut.
Here’s a suggested timetable that blends practical planning with a taste of what you’ll see.
10:00
Arrive
Spot the Giant Star
Look for the enormous Moravian Star by the roadside and park opposite the workshop. This is THE photo opportunity of the morning.
10:05
Craft Your Own Moravian Star
Start in the circular craft workshop hut just across from the car park. Staff help you choose colours—traditional red, white, and yellow, or a modern mix, like pink and blue. The choice is yours!
Our family made two: one classic, one playful. The hut shimmers with stars, and my daughters’ faces lit up the moment we stepped inside.
It truly is Christmas magic, no matter what time of year you visit.
- Allow: 15–30 minutes
- Family tip: No prep needed—everything is provided.
10:40
Watch the Professionals at Work
In the main building, watch artisans handcraft stars through four production stages. Information boards are in German and English, and the craftsmen are happy to answer questions.
Confronted with the inquisitive face of my daughter in her workspace, the lovely craftswoman gave her one point from the paper star she was working on. It remains a featured memory in her room, all these years later.
- Note: Photography isn’t allowed here.
11:05
Indoor Adventure Playground
This star-themed, two-storey play space is perfect for kids to burn off energy. There’s also a quiet toddler corner with books and colouring materials.
- Parent tip: Enjoy a coffee while the kids play.
- Our visit: We spent around 45 minutes here but it could have easily been longer!
12:00
Lunch
The café serves local classics like Wiener Würstchen and hearty lentil soup.
During the Adventszeit, a small Christmas market appears outside, offering all of the Christmas Market favourites, including Glühwein and Bratwurst.
- Budget tip: You’re allowed to eat your own food while here, so feel free to pack a picnic!
12:50
Museum & Short Film
Behind the information desk in a small theatre, a short film shares the star’s story (in German), with written info available in English.
- Tip: If your children aren’t interested, swap this for a short walk outdoors.
- Our Visit: We missed this part of the visit altogether! The kids spent all of the time enjoying the playground.
